How to Rank a Pest Control Business in the Google Map Pack

By Firnvane

To rank a pest control business in the Google map pack, you work on the three things it weighs: relevance, distance, and prominence. Distance is mostly fixed by where you are registered and where you serve. Relevance and prominence are where an operator has real leverage, and they come down to a complete, accurate Google Business Profile, a steady flow of recent reviews, service-area pages on your site, and a business name, address, and phone number that match everywhere online.

Search a phone for "termite inspection near me" and the first thing you see is not a list of blue links. It is a small map with three businesses under it, each with a star rating, a phone number, and a directions button. That block is the map pack, and for pest control, wildlife exclusion, termite, and rodent work it decides more calls than the rest of the results page combined.

It is also ranked by a different system than ordinary search results, which is why a company can sit at the top of the blue links and be nowhere in the map, or the other way around. Here is how it actually works, and what an operator can do about it.

Why the map pack is a separate system

Ordinary search ranking looks mostly at relevance and authority across the web. The map pack adds a third factor that changes everything: where the searcher is standing. Google is answering "who is near me and any good," not just "who is the best-known page on this topic." That is why local ranking behaves so differently from the results below it, and why optimising a website alone is not enough to move it.

The three things Google actually weighs

  • Relevance. Does your business profile and website clearly say you do this. A pest control company with "wildlife removal" nowhere on its profile will not surface for "squirrel removal," no matter how good the rest of the site is.

  • Distance. How close your registered location or service area is to the person searching. This is the one factor you cannot optimise your way around. You can only be honest about where you actually work.

  • Prominence. How established and trusted the business looks, based on review volume, review recency, how complete the Google Business Profile is, how consistently your name, address, and phone number appear across the web, and the SEO strength of your own site.

Relevance and prominence are where an operator has real leverage. Distance is mostly a fact about your business, not a setting to tune.

What you control, and what you do not

You cannot move your business closer to every searcher, and you cannot make Google show you outside a fair service radius. What you can control: how completely and accurately your profile describes what you do, how many recent reviews you have and how you respond to them, whether your website has a real page for each service someone actually searches, and whether your name, address, and phone number match everywhere they appear online. Those four things account for most of the difference between a map-pack regular and a company that never shows up.

The levers, roughly in order of impact

  • Google Business Profile completeness and accuracy. The right primary category, every service listed individually, an honest service-area setup, and a specific description. This is the single biggest lever and it is entirely in your hands. The full walkthrough is in Google Business Profile optimisation for pest control.

  • Recent review velocity. A steady stream of new reviews with replies signals an active, trusted business. Ten reviews in the last three months outweighs eighty from two years ago. Getting that flow without nagging is covered in how to get more pest control reviews.

  • Service-area pages on your site. A real page for each service, and for the towns you serve, gives Google something specific to match a local query against. One "Services" page that lists everything in a paragraph does not.

  • Name, address, and phone consistency. The exact same details on your site, your profile, and every directory. Inconsistency makes Google less confident it is looking at one business.

  • Overall site SEO strength. A fast, well-structured site with clear service content raises prominence and supports the profile. It is a slower lever, but it compounds.

Checklist

  • Primary category is the most precise fit for your main service.

  • Every service you offer is listed on the profile as its own entry.

  • Service area is set honestly to the towns and counties you actually cover.

  • New reviews are coming in every month, and every one gets a reply.

  • The site has a dedicated page per service, not one combined list.

  • Name, address, and phone are identical on the site, the profile, and directories.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I rank in one town but not the next one over?

Distance. The map pack is scored from where the searcher is standing, so results shift block by block. Service-area pages and a broader, honest service-area setting on your profile widen the radius where you can appear, but you will always be strongest near your registered location.

How long does it take to move into the map pack?

Profile changes like categories and services can shift visibility within a few weeks. Review velocity and site improvements work over months. It is a compounding effort, not a switch.

Can I pay to be in the map pack?

No. The three-business map pack is organic. Google's Local Services Ads sit above it in a separate, paid block with its own screening and badge.

Does my website matter if the profile is what ranks?

Yes. The profile does most of the ranking work, but the site backs it up: it is where service-area content lives, it carries NAP consistency, and its overall strength feeds prominence. The two work together.
